If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely pay the bride-price for her to be his wife. 17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the bride-price of virgins.

"According to the bride-price of virgins" applies the set-amount can fluctuate.

This isn’t a command for universal bride price. This is only for a very specific instance. Do you have any daughters?

As the mother of daughters I can say that the bride price I expect is for their potential husband to have a decent income, to be debt free, and to be a man of God and of integrity.

I think most men these days would rather write a check for $1,000,000

What instructions? There’s nothing to follow here unless someone seduces a virgin. And the 50 shekels isn’t in the text, that’s a someone’s best guess. And it’s a bad guess.

That’s slightly less than 50 ounces. You’re talking about $1,500. That’s what you think a man’s daughter is worth? If you came to me with that weak offer I’d probably pick a fight with you. You can’t get a used Civic for that much. You sure as hell can’t get my daughter.

Dear lord, who would want a woman that could be bought at all let alone one that could be bought for a week’s wage?

Today's customary bride price for virgins is zero. So father's are not expected to get anything. The best case scenario today for most fathers is that they have some type influence in who her future husband is. Usually - the daughters have already made their decision before her father is even in the picture.

Who would not want their daughter being married to a righteous man - that will provide and love her for life? One the flip side of the equation - which husband wouldn't want a holy and righteous virgin as his wife? She's a treasure who never lets her down. That type of woman is rare, and normally it's the fruit of parents that raised her well, and protected her from the traps of the world. The least the husband can do is give them some type of compensation - doesn't have to be a bride price (since there is no customer bride price) - but perhaps for their vacation - or if they are driving a un-safe car - help pay to fix it or help pay for an update - something like that would be righteous.

Not getting into the here-nor-there of the argument. :)

50 shekels was close to the silver weight/content of five hundred denarius. A denarius being a standard for a day's pay.

That makes 50 shekels equal to around two year's pay when one takes into account Sabbaths, feasts, and Holy Days where no one worked.

It may not be a substantial sum to us but it was a substantial sum at the time of Jesus.

I just googled it and it said that it was 9/10 of a Troy ounce and I went with it.

Studies show that virgins are the "least likely" to divorce their husbands.

The price for virgins shouldn't be too high, because it would be counter-intuitive to starting families and promoting marriage. You don't want only the rich to be able to afford marriage.

A customary bride price for virgins is good because it would help lower whoredom in the land. Many boyfriends deceive virgins into sleeping with them, and then leave the relationship. Zero consequences for the man's (boy actually) actions. Then he goes and repeats the process over and over again. Women lose their trust in men. When these women finally marry - studies show they are way more likely to initiate the divorce.

Now if that boyfriend had to pay a hefty fine each time he slept with a virgin, and didn't proceed with marrying her - guess what - he's most likely going to think twice before sleeping with a virgin without proceeding in marriage. That is great news for everyone. It means more women in the dating pool are virgins (they have not gone through heartbreak and deception from another man) - and once again - studies show that virgins are "least likely" to divorce. That is why I believe a 'customary bride price for virgins' should make a strong comeback. It's a deterrent for whoredom. If the price is too high - it becomes counter-intuitive for promoting marriage. And if it's too low then it's not a strong deterrent for whoredom.

The jewelry stores used to say that the wedding rings should be 3 times your monthly income. This was originally supposed to be used as a safeguard against "defaulting" on the promise of marriage with the idea that she cashes in on the gold and the diamond to start life over.
Not sure if that is baloney story or not but it puts some skin in the game for the hubs. Maybe it parallels the bride price idea?

Now seriously, How much would men pay for a talented smart hardworking woman? What is the value? I just paid 10k for a good used Jeep.
